1906-D Gold Coin
I need some information and am apparently inept at finding any.\
A family member has a gold double eagle, minted in 1906 in denver. Its in Uncirculated to almost uncirculated (very, very light use if any) condition. From what I could glean off line, the mintage was around 69,000 overall that year, and its one of the rarer years, but I didnt know if that mean just proofs and BU grades, or just overall. Does know anything abotu them. Im more of a bullion guy. |
Re: 1906-D Gold Coin
Not really but a Proof of a low mintage year would be FAR more valuable if still in MS
than an AU or MS 55 coin. In any case. |

Hey, Heimdahl:
What would you like to know? If you can post some pics I can give you an online grading and possible market value. Although, if that is what you want you can go to ebay and see what they go for. The Great Ag |

But I cant find ANY information on these none-proof ones. From what little I do know of grading, this coin looks to be uncirculated, or handled maybe just a few times when it was first put out into circulation. I see no appreciable marks on the high points of the coin, the edges are all clean and sharp. But its certainly no proof. I was telling him he might want to send it into PCGS to get graded, but just wanted to glean what information I can here as well, never hurts to learn! |

On ebay the Circulated and MS-50's were going around 1,100, I figured this one would be worth a bit more than that. I dont think hes looking tos ell though, he jsut didnt really know anything about the coin. I know pics would help, so Ill work on that before we leave the inlaws tomorrow. |
Re: 1906-D Gold Coin
AU-50 retail collector (red book figure) current value: about $1220.
AU-55 retail collector (red book figure) current value: about $1245. AU-50 retail dealer buy (blue book figure) current value: about $1110. AU-55 retail dealer buy (blue book figure) current value: about $1120. But IM non-collector O the coins should be worth more because of its comparative lower number minted. |
Re: 1906-D Gold Coin
Hey Heimdahl:
According to my numismatic book there were 620,250 double eagles minted in Denver in 1906. There were 69,596 minted in Philly, although price should be about the same as the Denver mint even though 580,000 more were minted in Denver. The Liberty Head Double Eagle were minted from 1850 to 1907. They do not carry as much numismatic value as the St. Gaudens which had a much shorter run from 1907 to 1932. Depending on the grade, it could be some big bucks, but it needs to be MS65+. Post some good pics and I can give you a fair grade. The Great Ag |

Re: 1906-D Gold Coin
Everyone should keep in mind, even if the coin in question is a
"PROOF" yet, has been handled, this will drastically reduce the value. A rare coin at TOP value would Ideally be, Proof, in "MS" Never Touched by Human hands and of course never circulated. It is possible for a "Mint State" grade coin, never handled to be worth MORE than a MS "Proof" coin with slight abrasions. Quote:

Re: 1906-D Gold Coin
APMEX will give you $1,220 for it.
http://www.apmex.com/Product/1121/20...or_Better.aspx I'd wait for another bubble on these $20 pieces and trade it for some profit + a 1oz piece. That's what I did with a bunch of St. Gaudens and Libs that came in. APMEX was paying about $200 more per coin when gold was around $1200 than they are now. So proportionally there is a huge difference. And they were paying almost as much for Libs as Saints. Time it right, and your friend could get some cash in his pocket plus some gold. When I did my last trade (I think there were 13 total? Can't remember) I came out with modern bullion equivalent to the net gold content of the $20 pieces plus another 3 free ounces of gold. I'll take that deal any day. |
Re: 1906-D Gold Coin
Hey, sorry, I kinda forgot about the thread.
I was out of town at my inlaws. It was my wifes grandad's coin, so I didnt get a chance to get pictures of it. He didnt know what it was worth in the slightest so I gave im a rough esitmate and then posted here. He seemed happy with it and didnt plan on selling anytime soon anyways. Thanks for all the help though guys. |
